St Richard’s Community Centre was set up from an old church hall building, to cover the first purpose-built social housing estate from the 1920s. We are an isolated community; boundaried on three sides by major roads.
St. Richard’s Church has been open since 1960, and the Community Centre opened in September 1993.
Throughout the years, we have evolved and adapted to meet the needs of an ever-changing community. Over this period of time there have been many positive changes to both the building and its uses. We now provide support and advice for small community groups, and are an important local venue for everything from training events to children's parties.
St Richard’s Community Centre is at the heart of a very active community. Many diverse groups use our facilities every day. We are located within the heart of the Knoll Estate in Hove, with easy access by public transport and plenty of free on-street parking.
We are a Community building in every sense, with offices used by several community-focused organisations and mental health services. We are used as a voting station, and host Council, daybreak and healthcare meetings. We also host birthday parties for 1-9 year olds and community events throughout the year.
We run St Richard’s Community Centre for the benefits of people locally as well as across Brighton and Hove. Our Community Centre has a relaxing and friendly environment and is open all year round.
The Centre is managed by The Knoll Community Association, set up to operate as a charity serving the residents of the Hangleton and Knoll area. The team consists of two employees who are accountable to the Trustees committee to manage everyday operations in the running of the building, including relationship-building with local residents, committees and partner organisations, building maintenance, health and safety and financial security.
All local residents are invited and welcome to attend meetings of The Knoll Community Association.
The Hangleton and Knoll Project use our building to work with local residents to access and develop opportunities and resources and to facilitate positive change as identified by the residents of our communities.
Rethink Mental Illness provide mental health information and advice, and run services and support groups to change people's lives and challenge attitudes about mental illness.
Routes is a local project offering free, personal support for anyone needing some help on their journey into employment. Delivered in partnership with The Hangleton and Knoll Project.
